Does Maybelline's Colossal Volum' Express Mascara REALLY Deliver Nine Times The Volume In One Coat?

{My lashes after one coat of mascara}

Here lately, I have been perusing my local drugstores trying to find products that were reasonably priced, yet effective. While in the cosmetic isle, the bright yellow packaging on this mascara caught my eye. I have never really used drugstore mascara, so honestly my expectations were fairly low. I presume the packaging, price, and lofty claims is what prompted me to toss in it the basket and give it a whirl.
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Mascara
$6.50 Walgreens

Here are the claims:
Creates 9X the volume, instantly
Patented MegaBrush + Collagen Formula plump lashes one by one
Dramatic Volume with no clumps
Washable
My review:
Nine times the volume in one coat? Not really my experience {more like 5}, however; my lashes have never looked this long and have had this much volume with any mascara. The brush is a little big so you need to really keep a steady hand during the application process as to not ruin your eyeshadow with tiny black dots.

Also, if you are going to wear more than one coat of mascara, it is best to apply the second coat immediately after applying the first. I noticed that this product has a tendency to dry fairly quick, and waiting too long in between coats could cause a severe case of tarantula lashes.

Would I buy this again?
Most definitely! I have tried many mascara's from Benefit and MAC, to Lancome and Dior, and this surprisingly was by far my fave of the bunch.

Here are some mascara tips that will help you nail your application every time!

Use a mascara primer to coat and separate lashes

For thicker, fuller lashes; mix your mascara. Apply one coat of lengthening mascara, then apply one coat of thickening mascara.
After applying two coats of mascara, add a third coat to just the outer corners only; it will help define the shape of your eyes and lengthen your lashes.
To prevent dots on your lower lash-line; wait 5-10 seconds before blinking.

To make eyes appear brighter and wider, reach for an eyelash curler! You can curl your lashes before or after applying mascara [tip: warm the eyelash curler with a burst of warm air from your blow-dryer before using].
  • Apply mascara in three easy steps:
  1. Wiggle the wand near the base of your lashes [this darkens the area near the lash-line giving the illusion of thicker, plumper lashes]
  2. Pull the wand up the lashes still wiggling the wand as you make your way up [this helps keep the lashes separated]
  3. With your eyes closed, apply mascara to the top of your lashes near the base of the lash-line in the same wiggling motion, bringing the wand to the tip of the lashes

  1. I used to be a Lacome Mascara fanatic but got tired of dropping that kind of money on such a small tube of mascara. I now swear by Covergirl Lashblast Length mascara. It is so awesome. I'm going to look into this Maybelline Colossal mascara now. A little mascara can make a world of difference especially since all I wear is a little eyeshadow and lipgloss in addition to the mascara. :) Great post!

  2. Where have you been girl? Maybelline's Great Lash in the pink and green tube is the #1 mascara and tgets the best favorite rating by In Style survey every year. It's the only mascara I use and always works better than the much more expensive brands. I haven't tried the new colossal but sounds like it's great too.

  3. Try Maybelline "The Falsies" mascara! Man, talk about va-va-VOOM in just a few strokes! Sometimes the best stuff is the cheap stuff :)
This brush is also pretty big, so I make sure I use my Estee Lauder mascara brush to blend (standard sized brush). Also, I apply (if any) my eyeshadow after my mascara, just to avoid any smudges.

  4. i LOVE CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion. that stuff separates my lashes and makes them look sooo long. the brush is pretty massive so you do have to watch it on your lids.

  9. You have to try Maybelline's new mascara "The Falsies"! I'm obsessed times a trillion. I used to use Cover Girl Lash Blast which I liked a lot as well. I actually like these 2 drugstore mascaras better than I ever liked Lancome.

  11. I have absolutely no lashes and tried everything from inexpensive to expensive and the only mascara that has given long lush lashes is Origins Full Story. (28 bux, but it is definitely worth it!)

  13. Its funny u say that about the clumping and immediately applying the second coat to avoid it but I found just the opposite in my experiences. I always get tarantula lash with this one if I don't let it dry between coats. In my own experience this mascara needs to be dried COMPLETELY before applying the next coat. And ur right the wand is really huge I would have appreciated a smaller wand but it has become one of my drugstore faves.

  14. my FAVORITE mascara is Lo'Real Voluminous in Carbon Black-HANDS DOWN!!!(well outside of MAC Black Out) I used to use Maybelline Volume Express but this is my favorite for the past couple of years..I'm a bit of a makeup junkie so ive tried them all! I short lashes so here are some of my tips that may help for volume and length(outside of primer like she mentioned)-i like to 1) apply the wiggle action to the base of the lashes and then pull up and out, 2) for my second coat apply to the lashes(not the base) only and then 3? apply just to the tips of the lashes-this helps to build the lashes and create length...then once completely dry i curly then so that i dont create any lumps and the weight of my mascara holds the curl in place..Tip for black dots: wait until you have completely applied of mascara and wait a few mins and then take a Q-Tip and lightly wipe the dot off- you wont ruin your shadow! took me years of looking like a clown to get it just right!

  15. This is by far y favorite mascara. I've strayed to try the "new" thing once in a while, but I always come back to this one! It gives me a fake eyelash look...in a good way!

  16. I will definitely give it a try. I have been on the hunt for the uber mascara for a while. My HG is Chanel Inimitable but at $30 a tube if I can find something else that does the trick I will. I have also tried Diorshow, Bad Gal, Lancome and MAC. Something a little less expensive would be great since sometimes you may need one mascara for lengthening and one for volume.

The tips you listed are great! Have you tried the 'business card' trick when applying mascara to prevent it from transferring onto you e/s? There should be a youtube vid on it.

Love your blog thanks for being such an inspiration!!

  17. wow. Maybelline brand flakes on me! Not terribly so but after a few hours i have little black particles under my eyes :( I really love L'oreal voluminous oh my and the million lashes!!?? lengthens and volumizes wonderfully. I really wanted to try the falsies but... I don't know why Maybelline doesn't work for my lashes but looks great on you :)

  18. I'm glad you did this post! Although I'm a faithful consumer of the Maybelline's Great Lash, I was almost tempted to purchase the Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Mascara
brand the other day. I picked it up but was very skeptical of its claims so I stuck to my usual - now that I see it works, I may try give it a try!

  19. i looked at your photo and immediately gasped, "omygosh... she is so pretty." I use that same mascara. I love it. I've been buying ever since I couldn't find the loreal collagen one... idk if they still make it anymore. But i'm too hooked on this one to care.

  20. This is a nice one BUT...try Maybelline's Lash Stilleto it's awesome! One coat and you have full lashes instantly.I bought it today on a whim becasue I tend to collect mascaras becasue each one does soemthing different ,when i need an all in one.
I don't like waterproof mascara that much so this is great,it washable but I think they have one that's water Proof as well.
Initially I wanted a Mascara that had no chemicals so I went to Sephora and bought Tarte ,it's awesome they have a 3 step process for those who want longer lashes. My lashes are butterfly-liscious already so I just wanted the chemical free aspect..this goes for about $25 but it's well worth it Esp if you wear contacts.
The Maybelline cost me about 8.99 plus tax.

I have long lashes though... but people always say "omg do u wear the individuals???" Like extensions. TRY IT =)
