Hair Quick Tip: Get More Of A Defined Twist Out + Pics

If you are looking for more definition for your twist outs, try using smaller twists. From experience, I have found that bigger/fatter twists yields more of a bouffant-like set [like this one], while smaller twists give more definition.

Here's How:
Shampoo + Condition hair as usual
Use your favorite creamy leave-in
Seal in the moisture with your favorite oil
Using your favorite curl defining cream, twist hair in sections of about 1inch in width - You should have about 20-30 twists
Allow twists to dry thoroughly before taking down. This is important, as you may have a mass of frizz on your hands if you take the twists down while they are still damp.
As you take down each twist, separate it into 2-3 sections to create additional volume
Give your hair a good shake to allow the curls to fall into place naturally

I used Qhemet Biologics Amla & Olive Heavy Cream as my leave-in because I wanted something thick and heavy on the moisture to go under the Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. You can use your favorite leave-in, but for maximum softness, opt for something a bit more heavy.

I also used Vatika Oil [found at most Indian Grocery Stores] to seal the moisture in, and add a bit more softness.  Vatika Oil is just Coconut Oil infused with herbs, so if you are unable to find this product, you can use regular Coconut Oil instead.

Last but not least, I decided to use Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding for maximum definition. You can use other products such as Komaza Coconut Hair Pudding [another personal fav], or even a gel. I have found that products such as these offer more hold versus butter-based products.

  1. I'm just about to get in the shower and twist my hair now.....smaller twists and doing it on WET hair have equaled the most defined twistouts for me. Twisting wet with blended beauty butter made those bad boys last for like 5 days when I went to nyc a couple months ago.

  3. Very cute and lots of definition.
    I love that you can twist hair dry or completely saturated with moisture and have different textures.

  4. Im going to try this asasp. Not sure about the Vatika oil as I tried it and it has an intense smell. Not sure if I can mustard that smell or does it go away?

  5. Lovely, lovely hair. I'm going to try this. Can't deal with the Vatika though. The smell is too much for me. I'll opt for plain old coconut oil. Question: Do you ever wear your hair in the twists? They are beautiful as is. Just wondering. :)

  6. How do you sleep on this style at night with out having it flat and stuck to your head in the morning? This is beautiful.

  8. Adorable! I love coconut oil, another great product is Jane Carter Solution Nourish and Shine. Perfect for the edges and to laydown the hair when I put it up in a ponytail etc. Works well with twist out too.

    Your hair is beautiful!

  9. I usually get a great twist out with smaller twists on wet hair. I love the results of your twist out. And your bangs make the style pop so well...Question, are all of your twists the same size all around, or did you make the ones in the front smaller?

  10. I'll have to try this. My last few twist outs have been disappointing, at best! Maybe I'm using the wrong products, twists are two big, something is amiss. I'm barely getting 2 day hair.

  11. @vonnie; Blended Beauty Butter huh? I may have to add that to the list...was there a specific type? I agree, smaller twists on wet hair makes for more definition!

    @BreukelensFinest; Thank you, I just twist as usual, add a little bit of Miss Jessie's to the ends to get them to "act right", and dip them in warm water. They curl up on their own after that.

    @Sing; Thank you! I know right, we have so much versatility with our hair, it's fun to play around with different techniques because you never know what you're going to wind up with.

    @ashley; The smell does go away, but you can always substitute it for Coconut Oil

    @Tanisa (Olivia) Rossii; Thank you!

    @Mrs. Abdur-Rahman; Thanks!

    @LaToya; Thank you! LOL Funny because I have gotten so used to the smell, that I don't even really notice it anymore. I don't wear them out because I feel I look like Larenz Tate! LOL

    @LadyTaurus; Thank you! When I wear this particular style, I literally have to re-twist nightly. It doesn't take long though [about 20 minutes]; and when I wake up in the morning, I take them down, and it looks exactly the same.

    @Juceefroot; Thank you! That's the only thing lacking in this style is the BIG factor. I have to figure out a way to get BIG defined hair.

    @Calming; Thank you! Jane Carter Nourish and Shine was one of my favorite products! I need to pick up more, I would use it on my body, and hair!

    @JAY Thank you! And yes, I made the twists in the front slightly smaller than the rest of my twists!

    @BlackBetty; Definitely try this [and the products if you can], the products and techniques play a major role in getting a defined look that lasts.

  14. Okay, I saw that you have another personal fave ..komaza pudding...Since I'm a huggggge miss jessie fan i really haven't come across a product that I like better. How do they fare in comparison to each other? Does komaza give you that va va voom hair like Miss jessies? Is komaza coconut pudding more moisturing than curly pudding?

  17. My hair is very thin, any suggestions on how to make my twist look fuller?

  18. Have you ever tried MJ buttercream for a twist out? Im newly natural and on the same quest for defined twists on my 4 inch type 4a hair.Something what will elongate, define, and elimnate frizz or am I looking for the impossible?

  19. Gorgeous twist out! Do you sit under the dryer with the curly pudding? I know with the buttercreme or silkening cream that heat is supposed to enhance the effectivness of the product. Just wondering because Im on a quest for finding something to eliminate frizz and give me maximum defnition with my twist and bantu knot outs. I just looked at my CP that I purchased today and it said air dry so now im apprhensive about sitting under the dryer for this product.

  22. my hair is thin, kinda of how your hair was before you begin treating it right. What do you suggest to add volume to twist outs? my twists are the size of a pencil for a part the size of a matchbook.Im a victim of heat damage and i just have thin hair
