My Hair: The Blown-Out Braid Out

Remember that epic fail of a braid out I mentioned in earlier this week? Well many of you wanted to see more pics of it, so here it is! - I am not too fond of it because it is more bouffantish versus curly. I will experiment with it this weekend using other products and techniques.

My hair may look a little wavier in these pics, it's just because I have been braiding it every night.

If anyone is interested in achieving this look, here is what I did:
Blow-dried hair using a Denman brush {the Denman is heaven sent for blow-drying} - I love this brush because it makes for a silkier, straighter blow-out. I also used Aveda Brilliant Damage Control as my heat protectant.

Set hair in four twists [two in the front and two in the back] using Coconut Oil

Took down twists after about two hours

Added a bit of shine by using my CHI Silk Infusion!

Do any of you do dry braid outs? If so what products or techniques have you found the most success with?

  1. Your hair is so thick and fabulous. My (step)daughter has, possibly your same hair textured, but unfortunately its permed. I try to keep it juicy and healthy despite the chemicals (not my idea). Anywho. I am going to try this and see how she likes it. What coconut oil do you recommend. I use Olive Oil and Tui by Carol's daughter currently.. I am a sucker for anything that smells like coconut. Sorry for the long comment.

  3. Doesn't look like a fail to me. Even in the previous jewelry pics. Your hair is fabulous and healthy. By the way, love the jewelry, I shall be buying. Looking out for more.

  5. You need moister products (if that makes sense), maybe something like hair milk or a cream. The water in the products shouldn't cause too much reversion or shrinkage, but would lock in a curl pattern. I would also suggest using a few more twists, or trying three strand twists, since you have so much hair.

  6. Which Denman Brush do you use and where can I find it? I've tried a few local beauty supplies around LA with no luck. Thanks!

  8. I just started doing dry braid outs because I get so much frizz on my wet sets. I actually use Argan Oil, Garnier cream sculpting gel and Garnier sleek-n-shine cream. I blow dry my hair to just dry on warm and cool settings. I mix all ingredients together and apply as I braid my hair. I do cornrows about 15-20( I don't have your length but do have the thickness so the more braids the better for me)I tie it up for the night and apply a little Argan oil as I undo the braids and voila! great results! volume, shine, softness and a great curl pattern. I do re-braid each night (not as many) but that's my own personal thing. I'm not one to know about all the chemicals as you are but water is the first ingredient on both, but also words that end in "cone" and glycerin is in one. There are some new products I want to try but I have to use these up first, since I'm trying to curb my pjism:)I hope this helps because goodness knows you've helped me! Good Luck!

  10. I just did a dry braid out and it was SO pretty this morning....until I went out into the humid Texas weather and promptly had to put it in a puff! It resembled a cotton ball. Booooo, hissssss!!!!

  11. Since I've started dry twisting, I've gotten much better results. After shampooing and conditioning, I rinse with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and cold water. Then I twist with a mixture of Giovanni Leave In and Shea Moisture Hair Milk.

  12. SHRINKAGE!! Argh! First, your hair is still fabulous in my humble opinion, "fail" or not lol. Second, I had a fabulous dry braid out last Friday night which stood about 8 inches off my head. Two hours later after a serious dancing session, I damn near had a TWA! It had shrunken by like 60%, waves KAPUT! Anyone have any tips for fighting the shrink on type 4 hair??

  13. after a blow out or flat iron session i find the only product that can hold a twist or braid pattern which doesn't have water as a top ingredient is a balm like shea butter or a gel like ic fantasia... only down side is build-up so i try to apply very little and not often then re-braid/twist nightly. if u find a better solution please let me know :)

  14. I do dry braid outs from time to time and the shea moisture conditioning curl milk never fails me. Its lightweight so my hair stays fluffy but has enough hold so that my waves are defined. I also leave my braids in overnight and put curlers on the ends to really set the style. Hope that helps!

  15. I think your hair looks cute, but I can see what you mean about wanting more definition. I actually prefer dry braidouts, because my hair shrinks to much when I do them on wet hair. Once my hair is all braided up with whatever products I'm using, I lightly mist the braids with water afterwords. I also leave the braids in overnight. Two hours wouldn't be nearly enough time for the braids to set in my hair.

  16. I do dry twist outs with a spritz from my water bottle and jane carter's nourish and shine. I just did a bc last year so I don't really have enough length for the wet twist set to look right. Plus the nourish and shine leaves my hair so soft.

  17. Too gorgeous for words! Personally braidouts never worked for me..dont know if it was that my hair was too thin or be; cause it wasnt long enough..anyway love yours : )

  18. I love your hair!!! How do you get your ends straight when you blowdry?? my ends always clump together while the roots get straight. Please help

  19. A little product with water in it helps it set better. Just enough to where it won't defeat the purpose of blow drying in the first place, but it will allow the pattern to set. Also, try braiding until you get almost to the end and then twist the very ends. This helps make the ends look less frazzled and more natural. ;)

  20. I love the dry braidout! But about the denman...doesn't it tend to cause breakage when used to detangle or blow dry? I've just heard a lot of negative things about the Denman and how it pulls out hair.

  21. I don't blow dry. I style my hair in a low banded ponytail to air dry. I use Giovanni Direct Leave-in. I give it a full day to dry. The next day, I wear it out. Each night I re-braid it using SheaMoisture. I forgot the name of the condtioner(Target). It is a thick lotion consistantcy. I wet the very end of the braid with water, aloe vera gel, evoo and band it to secure it at night. The next day I have wavy, stretched curls that are very coily on the ends. I get tons of compliments, due to the texture and length. It looks like a wet set braidout but much more length.

  22. When I blow-dry, I have to leave my braids in longer if I want a nice wavy style upon taking them down. I use shea butter and leave in conditioner and that's normally enough. I haven't done a tutorial yet so maybe that'll be one for the near future!

I get your drift, sometimes my hair blown out is just a bit much lol ..feel like the lion in Narnia..
