Having Trouble With Oil Cleansing?

Are you experiencing issues with the OCM? Here are two very important pieces of information to remember as you dive face first into the world of oil cleansing;
------
1. It is important that you use the proper oil for your skin type! For instance; those that have very oily, acne prone skin may have adverse reactions to Olive Oil as it is very, very heavy. While those that have drier skin may need heavier oils like Olive or Avocado. If you are in the dark about which oils to use for your skin type, check out these posts [post 1, post 2] before making your skin care mixture. It will save you a lot of trial and error.

2. Make sure you remove all traces of oil after oil cleansing. Sebum and bacteria-laden oil that is left on the skin can actually trigger additional breakouts. After removing oil, take a cotton ball filled with toner and sweep it across your face, if you see residue or dirt on the cotton ball, it's a friendly reminder to wash and rinse thoroughly.

Also make sure you keep these tips in mind
  • Make sure your towel is warm enough so that the heat opens your pores. Remember the oil from your oil cleansing formula is what dissolves the oils trapped in your pores. It is important to open the pores in order for the enzymes in the oils to dissolve the blockage.
  • Use a new washcloth daily to cut down on cross contamination. - When you drop your washcloths in the machine, add a bit of Oxyclean [or a similar product] to your cycle as it is very effective in removing grease/oils from fabrics.
  • Are you using too much Castor Oil? It is important to remember that Castor Oil is the cleansing agent. If your formula leaves your skin feeling dry and stripped, it may be time to lower the amount of Castor Oil in your mixture and up the amount of your secondary oil.
  • Make sure you thoroughly cleanse around the sides of your face, your hairline, and chin areas as those are all areas that are prone to breakouts.
  • Are you cross contaminating your face with cell phones and house phones? It's important to keep those devices clean as well.

        1. Thanks so much! I was definitely doing the opposite of some of your tips(i.e. too much castor oil, not using a new cloth each day because I thought one just for the face would be sufficient)...I will try it again and let you know how it goes

        3. I've been doing the OCM since Monday of this week. I must say I was a skeptic at first; however my eyes have been open. Thank you so much for the research that you did and sharing it with us! I have oily acne prone skin and the castor oil and grape seed oil combination is excellent. I’m allergic to hazelnut oil when digested, so using it on my skin made me a little nervous so I didn’t use it. Overall the OCM is great and I will be advising others to try. Thanks again!

        4. Great tips! I've been OCM'ing for about a week now, and I was about to give up because I've got a few new breakouts. I now attribute it to the not using a warm enough cloth to open up the pores and not following up with a toner...I'll now incorporate these two important steps. Thanks<3

        7. OMG this post read my mind! I started OCM about a month ago and it was going great until about 2 weeks ago when my chin broke out! I have these HUGE pimples on my chin that wont go away. Ive tried everything and I dont know what to do! The rest of my face is perfect though. Its really strange. The breakout on my chin is deep under the skin, the kind of pimples you cant get to. Please help!

        8. the phone thing is so sneaky!! good advice. another sneaky source of clogged pores and pimples is oily pillowcases! I have to change my pillowcase just about daily! It's annoying but I was breaking out on the sides of my face where it touches the pillow :-/

        10. My attempts at a week of OCM have been going great. I use grapeseed oil and I can stand a little more heat, so I actually wet my washcloth and stick it in the microwave for 30 seconds. I have seen a big difference.

        11. Thanks for those extra tips...I have been breaking out on my cheeks and it doesn't seem to be going away that easily..I have been doing OCM for about a month now. Will definitely try the new washcloth everyday thing, changing pillow cases more often, cleaning phone...(boy all the thing one must do to have clear skin!).
However,I am still having trouble finding the right combination of oils for my skin type since I don't really know what my skin type is...for the longest time, I thought I had dry skin but I went to Bioterm (they let you have some skin test for free) and they told me my skin was normal..combination oily! what's the best combination for normal to combination oily skin?
Anyone has good tips on finding out what skin type one is?

Finally, what's the shelf life for the toner? Do you leave it in the fridge?

          Pls pls pls help...

          Thanks again :)

        14. Talk about right on time! thanks for the posting the tips! I had started using the OCM like many have stated above and saw a HUGE difference...definitely will remember to use a new washcloth everyday (was doing the complete opposite)..and also what is the best way to store the toner as well as oil?

          Thanks so much!

        15. Thanks for this! But what about toners? I tried the ACV toner and it stings... Has that happened to anyone else? I was starting to see tiny bumps (like a heat rash) on my face so I had to stop that... Would rose water be a good toner to use instead of the ACV?

        16. The OCM is working great! It got rid of almost all of my pimples in just a week. However I have been doing the ACV toner and it seems to make my skin really dry and flaky. I have tried to dilute but no matter what I do my skin is still dry. Any suggestions?

        17. I love the OCM!!.. My face cleared up instantly and it has this amazing glow to it..Everybody notices!! My face is soo soft like a baby's bottom..I use Castor oil(20%) Olive Oil(70%)Grapeseed Oil(5%) and Jojoba Oil(5%, After that I use witch hazel to tone my face..its fantastic!! I also clean my washcloths everyday and clean my cell phone with alcohol swabs from my job.. I will be doing this method every morning.. Thanks for the tips!!

        18. I must agree wholeheartedly about the olive oil, I didn't know at the time, but it was definitely TOO heavy for my skin and I broke out. I also used too much castor oil. I plan to try the method out with hazelnut oil and grapeseed oil and I'm hoping for nice results :)

        19. Nikole, my biggest problem with the OCM is that I don't get that "squeaky clean" feeling after cleansing. I know, I know it's bad to have that feeling because it means I've stripped my skin of all its essential oils. Did you have the same issues when switching the the OCM?

          ReplyDelete
        20. I'm glad you posted this - I read your previous posts on OCM and because I have oily/acne prone skin, I was very nervous to try...I'll keep this tips in mind when I gather the courage to try this out :)

        21. After I tried this method I noticed more breakouts...however my skin was mositurized and the tone of it was improved....I;ll try again with the tips you mentioned, however I think I might be allergic to castor oil. Is there another oil that can act as a cleansing agent ?

          ReplyDelete
        22. I can't tell you how grateful I am for your post. I really have struggled with very very oily skin and I used to wake up with my face soaked in oil each morning but with this method I wake up with a fresh face! Its wonderful. I have been using Olive Oil whiles waiting on my order from Texas Natural Supply for Hazelnut oil. Yeah, I still break out so it may be the culprit. My face still gets oily during the day at work so I may have to switch to hazelnut instead of grapeseed oil as my moisturizer when it arrives. and of course drink more water which I am try to get better at doing.
