Perfectly Coiffed

[Source: Aminah]
I am on a quest to achieve the perfect the curly fro. I am getting increasingly bored with my hair, and want something a bit bigger than what my braid outs and twist outs give me. This week I plan to experiment with jumbo perm rods, and jumbo flexi rods in hopes that something fab comes out of it. Until then, looking at pics of others rocking their fierce fro's will have to do.

[Sidebar] I think the cut of their hair has a ton to do with the way the fro looks, as it looks like it was "shaped" in it's naturally curly state to achieve a certain balanced look. After looking at these pics, getting my hair shaped is starting to look more and more appealing.

  1. i recently got my hair shaped and it was well worth it. i have 3c/ 4a, bra-strap lenghth (when stretched/ flat ironed) hair, but i noticed that my hair had his very un-appealing "mushroom" shape paired with a couple of straight ends from heat damage. So, I mde up my mind to get my hair layered and it made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. my hair is no longer "mushroom- looking". It has shape (like the pics above) and the dead ends are all gone. It looks so much better, trust me. So i suggest that you go ahead and get it layred, it makes a world of a difference. And, when you see how much better it looks, loosing a couple of inches will seem well worth it! good luck

  2. Yes!!! The mushroom shape, I sooo know what you mean, and I loathe it. You know you just pushed me completely over the edge right? LOL If I had scissors, I would probably start chopping now. After seeing those pictures and reading your comment, I am convinced that something needs to be done! And soon!

  3. I love this post....so with achieving a shape up..is it done on wet hair or slightly blown?

  4. @V-Natural Me, Thanks chica, it all depends on the salon you go to, there are places that cut your hair while it is in it's natural state (air dried). And there are some places that cut while your hair is wet (I don't think I am going to go that route). Some salons will also blow out your hair, and then cut it, I have seen pretty fierce results with the methods mentioned above.

We shall see soon, because I am itching to get this done.

  6. I don't even know what to say. I am speechless at these pictures. Speechless and in desperate need of a shaped curly afro. This was just the inspiration I needed.

  7. I have also been playing around with this idea... I hate the shape of my hair... I am 16 months into my transistion to natural hair... I only have maybe 4 inches of relaxed hair left. So im thinking of cutting the rest off and shaping it up... But not sure of ANY salons in the LA Area... If you find a place, please share...thanks...great post... Nita

  11. OMG, I love these pics! I'm sad b/c the front & back of my hair is still straight [probably due to heat damage, or permed ends not being cut all the way] & different hair textures. Plus, I don't think it's long enough yet to achieve the look i'm reaching for. I'm veryy envious, &adore these photos!

  12. You just added my food blog on Twitter (The Duo Dishes), and I had to check out your site. Just went 100% natural back in November, so it's great to connect. The process is trying, yet eye opening. Your hair is gorge!

  14. @Chrystal I absolutely LOVE your blog. And thank you for the compliment! I definitely agree that going natural is a eye opening experience. I have definitely learned a lot about myself during that process.

  15. I really love this blog!

My friend Lexxaye above shared your blog on Buzz and I will not be a faithful reader. I've been saying I want to go natural for years now and it's always "okay, next season... okay okay next summer" and I want to get moving on the process. I've been relaxing my hair since I was 10 and I want a change.

  16. Hey,
I kinda have my hair shaped but im leaning more towards growing the layers out a little more - typical eh - always wanting what we dont have lol!
I also use and afro comb - and gently backcomb the crown of my hair, i dont need to for fullness as my hair is super thick - But, it does get flat at the crown for some reason, think its to do with the direction the roots grow etc...but i do that VERY gently to not cause hurtful friction but it really does give that boost and I highly recommened it - and diffusing/scrunch drying a wash and go if you dont mind OCCASSIONAL heat and a bit of shrinkage, but again, works wonders!
    Good luck xx
