Product Review: Shea Moisture Conditioner + Curl Enhancing Smoothie + Strengthening Elixir

I made my way to Target and killed some time perusing the beauty isles. I heard a lot of buzz about Shea Moisture, but I never had a chance to try it out until now! I decided to pick out three products to see how they worked before going crazy and buying everything under the moon. I settled on the Strengthening Elixir, the Raw Shea butter Restorative Conditioning Milk and the Organic Curl Enhancing Smoothie! Here is my review:

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioning Milk:
Target Stores, $9.99 -  12oz
Product Claims:
Moisturizes and repairs dry, lifeless, over-processed and damaged hair.
Product Ingredients:
Contains de-ionized water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea butter)*, Argan oil, coconut oil*, Behentrimonium chloride, essential oil blend, vegetable glycerin, emulsifying wax, sea kelp extract, Panthenol (vitamin B-5), avocado oil, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower and Lonicera Japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract, Tocopherol (vitamin E) and Daucus Carota Sativa (carrot) seed oil. *Denotes certified organic ingredients.

Product Review:
This stuff was absolutely AMAZING. Hands down my favorite of the bunch. I used this as a leave-in and added about a dime size amount per 2-inch section of hair and it was heaven for my strands. It made my hair soft, shiny, manageable, and offered slight curl definition. I give this a 10 out of 10 when it comes to moisture, as it is definitely hydrating enough for highly textured hair.

Would I buy this product again?
Most definitely; for $10 I will definitely keep this in the "leave-in" product rotation!

Organic Curl Enhancing Smoothie:
Target Stores, $9.99 - 12oz
Product Claims:
Detangles, conditions and defines curls while restoring body and shine.

Product Ingredients:
Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Isopropyl Myristate, Sugar Starch, Silk Protein, EssenQal Oil Blend, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Caprylyl glycol, Sorbitol Esters, Algae Extract, Hyssopus Officinalis Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leafand Equisetum Arvense Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower (and) Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E).
Product Review:
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical because most curl creams just don't work for my hair unless they are formulated with Polymers to offer hold and volume. I threw it in the basket anyway, and used this product to twist my freshly shampooed and conditioned hair. I didn't use a leave-in conditioner underneath this product because the ingredients listed could offer moisture and curl definition.
Once applying the product, I did notice some curl definition, but not enough to use for a wash and go. If you have more of a defined curl pattern, the Curl Enhancing Smoothie could really help those curls pop. - My hair was definitely smooth, extremely soft, and manageable once applying the Smoothie; and most importantly, this helped my twists stay twisted. My only qualm with this product was that I had major shrinkage, my twists were barely shoulder-length.

After untwisting my hair the next day, my hair was still hydrated, soft, and shiny. I love that this product didn't leave my hair crunchy, greasy or covered in film, a definite plus!

Would I buy this product again?
I'm honestly not quite sure. Although the performance was stellar, my hair was much shorter than normal [because of the shrinkage].
Before Shrinkage...
After Shrinkage.....

Strengthening Elixir:
Target Stores, $9.99 - 4oz
Product Claims:
Our intensely moisturizing and penetrating all natural treatment helps repair damage and dry hair.

Ingredients:
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Bu@er) Oil*, Argan Oil, Vegetable Squalene, Carrot Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil, Isopropyl Myristate, Avocado Oil, Castor Oil, Sebacic Acid, Sea Kelp Extract, EssenQal Oil Blend, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower (and) Lonicera Japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E). *Denotes Certified Organic Ingredient.
Product Review:
I usually don't purchase oils from haircare companies because I find that a lot of times they are cut with cheaper oils like Sunflower and Corn Oil, however I was impressed with the ingredient list in this product so I threw it in the basket. The only "non-natural" ingredient in this product is Isopropyl Myristate which really just cuts the greasy feel of the product, leaving more of a satiny finish.

I sprayed this on my hair after my twists were complete and the immediate result was uber shiny hair. After about an hour or so of my hair absorbing the product, my hair was ultra soft, silky, and still very, very, shiny! - I like that I can get the benefits of Shea Butter without having to use it in "butter form"; for some reason Shea Butter just "sits" on top of my hair, leaving it more greasy than anything. The Shea Oil that is used in this elixir is better suited for my hair. Also, because of the lightness of this product, I would also recommend it to those that wear their hair pressed, or in roller-sets. This Elixir can help fortify your hair protecting it from heat damage and loss of elasticity from mechanical damage [combing, brushing, blow drying], it can also impart shine, softness and body.
Would I purchase this product again?
Most definitely, this quickly earned a spot in my "staple product" list.

  2. I'm getting into all these all organic hair products since my hair is starting to struggle with cones lately. I'm loving the ingredients in most of these especially the first product. You got the PJ in me calling.

  5. I definitely love the Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner. It adds a ton of moisture to my hair.

  6. I am a fan of some of the Shea Moisture products. I find that the benefit of moisture is more important to me than the shrinkage it causes to my 4b/c hair.

This past summer I started with the smoothie and you're right, no real curls are produced unless you have true curl pattern, but it has a light scent and is a fantastic moisturizer. I'm curious to see how it works this winter season.

I also use the Coconut/Hibiscus conditioning milk. It's lighter than the smoothie and (for me) produces a different type of twist and twist-out look. The final product I use is the Restorative masque as a conditioner. It leaves my hair super smooth after rinse-out, but does nothing for me as a leave-in. And 10 bucks is alright with me! lol

I'll have to check out that elixir. I haven't noticed that in the closest Target to me. Thanks for doing a review.

  8. OMG I have been ADDICTED to the Shea Moisture products since I BC'd my hair 3 weeks ago. You MUST try the Hold & Shine Moisture Mist. It's primarily water, coconut oil and shea but it has a bunch of other amazing ingredients. The perfect spritz to add moisture to 2nd or 3rd day hair. And I love the Curl Enhancing Smoothie for dry styling, not so much for wet styling. Try it for a dry twistout and see if you like it better ;)

  9. I love Shea Moisture. I recently bought the moisture retention shampoo and the curl enhancing smoothie. They both leave my hair so soft. I was especially impressed by the shampoo. It actually made my hair easy to detangle, and I barely lost any hair in the process.

  10. I didn't like the curl enhancing smoothie. The texture seemed off to me...perhaps I need to rub together and emulsify. My hair didn't seem to like it, but given the amount in the jar...I need to do something with it!

I loved the restorative treatment though!

  11. What products do you find help most with shrinkage when setting for twist or braid outs? I seem to experience this exact result with my current routin. And Thanks to your review, I can narrow the culprit to my product choice.

  12. Thanks for this review! I really like the curl enhancing smoothie...but there was something about it that only had me 90% sold on it. I think it is the shrinkage factor. I have to try it on dry twists as another commenter mentioned and see if I like that better. I have a true curl pattern but I don't notice that it enhances my curls-but it definitely give slight hold under a styler, which I like :)

  13. I will definitely be trying this style and product, I have a curl pattern in the back and no where else so I have been looking for the right products.

  14. Thanks for this review. I just bought their deep conditioner so we shall see how it does.

  15. great review! I can't wait to purchase these.

  16. Yes, that was a lot of shrinkage. What products do you use to reduce shrinkage?

  17. Great review. I'm putting these on my wish list! I've been looking for a leave-in conditioner that won't leave me broke...

  18. Omg! You must have gone to target the same time I did! After combing through your blog (love it by the way!) I went to target looking for some of the products you suggested in your post about building a hair regimen...I was absolutely surprised that my Target sold all Miss Jesse's products, kinky curly products (knot today was of course all sold out), and I saw this she line. I picked up the elixir and absolutely LOVE IT. I don't get commercial oils for the same reason you do...I abandoned Carol's Daughter oils for the same reason. But this elixir was the bomb, and my hair is more textured than yours I think...so for all my 4b sisters I second that elixir recommendation. I'll have to try the smoothie though, thanks for the review Nikole, and keep doing your thing, you inspire me!

  19. I keep hearing that the curl enhancing smoothie doesn't actually give curl definition. I guess it's just for moisture? I'll have to check out that elixir though now that I can find these products in my neck of the woods. Thanks for the review :).

  20. I love the curl enhancing smoothie for my hair. It always feels so soft and moisturized for days. However smh I must be allergic to something in it. Everytime I've used it to twist my hair, Ive come down with a massive headache smh. Smh as i said "everytime"....meaning Ive continued using it despite the migraine smh bcus my hair loves it so much. Also after a few days in my hair the smell is really pungent to me. I bought two jars of it smh...and i still have a jar left. I'm just gonna give it to my little cousin. Maybe i'll try the restorative milk. They really are great products... I'm just too sensitive to certain oils and smells.

  21. Hi Nikole, I live in the Los Angeles area (the valley), and I've been looking for the shea moisture raw shea butter restorative conditioning milk, as well as revlon colorstay liquid makeup in cappucino. However, none of the targets near me carry shea moisture or makeup colors past 'tan'. If you don't mind, will you share what area you buy these products?

  22. I love your product reviews! I started using the Suave Shampoo and Conditioner you suggested, I love it. At my local Walmart it sells for $1.86??? Can't beat the price and it works. I am giving it as a stocking stuffer this Xmas! I will try your current reccomendations as well. What about the body products that they make, review?

  24. Nik! We must have been at the store at the same time thinking the SAME thing.

I bought the Curl Enhancing Smoothie over the weekend because I had run out of the Deep Treatment Masque that I love. When I visited Target, they had run out so I got the Smoothie instead this time. I twisted me hair Sunday night, took it out this morning: My hair was SUPER soft, smelled great but it looks like I just did my big chop...I'll probably take pics and blog about it today as sort of like a response post I guess...

You hair still looks great but it made a MAJOR difference in the length.

  25. I have found that many naturals mistakenly think the Curl Enhancing Smoothie will magically change their curl pattern. You are right about curl definition. It's purpose is to enhance the curl definition you already have by providing moisture and shine.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I used the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie for a twist out and did not like the definition or the heavy feeling it imparted on my hair. After two tries, I realized it was not for me. So I started using it as a body moisturizer. It's a little heavy but I let it soak in for a few minutes. I love the deep treatment mask. I add/mix in jojoba oil, sesame oil, and aloe vera juice to the product and my hair loves the treatment! Great shine, softness, detangling power, and curl definition!

  27. I LOVE Shea Moisture. I'm currently using Shea Moisture Deep Masque Treatment. My hair definitely feels soft and remains shiny and hydrated which I love. I'm always leery of "curl enhancing smoothies" so I skipped that one in the aisle. LOL.

Your hair is still beautiful, shrinkage or not :)

  28. I really love Shea Moisture and am almost afraid to admit it on a public forum out of FEAR that the price will increase dramatically!

But I just wanted to say, IMO it works even better if you sit under the dryer for 20 minutes or so to allow the twists to set. This might even help with your shrinkage (altho I haven't experienced much shrinkage myself, with the product).

  29. I use the curl enhancing smoothie every once in a while mainly because I haven't found a product that keeps my hair as soft and shiny. However, I do agree with the shrinkage, it bounced my hair up above shoulder length and I,m not sure if I like that just yet lol!

The Conditioning Milk is my best-friend, I love it...I use it every other week and I share the love with this Organic Conditioner (I forget the brand, I'll get back to you on that haha!)

    Great review!

  32. I love the Shea Moisture products. I have used the Deep Treatment Masque, Hold & Shine Moisture Mist: was great with my protective style for braids, Coconut & hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioning Milk and the Curl Enhancemnt Smoothie.

  33. Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioning Milk - I really liked this product. It made my very cury hair soft and manageable. It also smelled good and would probably work well any hair type especially coarse, natural and/or curly hair types. I will definately buy this again and it's all natural! Great product, excellent results and reasonably priced.

  34. Organic Curl Enhancing Smoothie - I'm in love with this product. I got it a few days ago from Target and my hair loves it. You only need just a little to see the difference. My curls pop instantly and sometimes I put a little gel on my hair too for hold, but my hair feels really soft after using it. Just recently, my mom tried to take it to her salon so she can use it on some of her clients, lol! Yet, I would recommend a try because it is a very good product. I'm looking forward to using some of the other products from the Shea Moisture line as well.

  35. I really like Shea Moisture. Right now, I have the Smoothie and the spray Elixir. At first I wasn't sure about the Smoothie, but I added some Aloe Gel and jojoba oil to it. Then I started using a VERY small amount (before I used too much and there was this residue), and it's so much better. And the Elixir adds a nice shine to my hair.

    I'm a fan:)
