Fashion & Beauty Ethos: Fur Vests; Love It Or Leave It?

 [source]
After having heinous faux fur vest experience at one of my favorite stores, I was against the whole fur vest movement. Looking back on it, I think I over-styled the outfit. My hair was too big [I really felt like a lion with the hair and the vest], and the outfit too busy for a piece that commands that much attention.

However after seeing it on a few people, worn different ways, I think I am better equipped to revisit the trend. What I love about fur vests is that it really can up the ante on skinny jeans and a tee, flowy bohemian maxi dreses, and even slouchy boyfriend jeans and a plain white hubby beater.
For more of a funky look you can wear one open with a flirty skirt and a long sleeve shirt. Or you can belt it, throw on some leggings, boots, and a plain long sleeve shirt for a chic, yet effortless look. I definitely recommend taking cues from Kelly by keeping the pieces simple, and the patterns to a minimum because you really want the vest to take center stage.
Again I love how Ciara kept the silhouette clean by belting the vest and opting for a monochromatic color palette. For more of stylized, edgy look, you can leave the vest open and throw on some leather driving gloves, or 5-finger half gloves like these at Patricia Fields:
Arlenis wears her fur vest with military inspired pants, and buckle boots which gives this look a chic, utilitarian feel.

The good thing about this trend is that it is accessible on every budget. The vests pictured above are all under $89, however you can find them even cheaper at the stores mentioned below! - Remember if you pick up one of these to keep the silhouette clean, accessories & hair simple, and the color play to a minimum to help you nail the look!

  4. I really love your blog, but I disagree with this post. I could never live with myself if I wore a vest made of about twenty creatures who were skinned alive, just for fashion. It's just barbaric and cruel. I'm not trying to "preach", but this is just something that is wrong on so many levels.

  5. Leave it. Why would I want to look like there is a large dead animal wrapped around me. Kelly particularly looks ridiculous to me. Gorgeous girl, but ridiculous outfit.

  6. I love it but only at a steal. I'd never splurge since I pretty much only wear it for my daughter and nieces (they're all 6 and under and love it).

  7. Ok... This is mos def a LOVE IT, not a leave it! Faux fur is a great stand alone piece for almost any outfit. I do agree with the big hair and fur lol! It out of control, I usually wear a messy bun, kind of like Liya in the first photo when wear my fur vest.

I should of held back with buying the fur pieces living in LA, they will take up space in my wardrobe, but its so chic, I couldn't resist! Guilty Pleasure! :-/

  8. The girl in the first picture looks great, but that may just be the whole mood/feeling of the picture. In general this is a leave-it trend for me.

  23. First, I'm from France and I really love your blog !
I just wanted to say I can accept "faux fur" but I think the business of "the real fur", is such an horrible thing, it's a absolute "crime against Nature " , do you (people who wear it) realise that creature (like you even if they can't think, speak or whatever esle ) which have feelings ,are literally sacrified for such a superficial goal as look "prettier" or something ?!!
This is a nonsense for me

  24. Just did a blog about a mink fur vest I found at a vintage store! One of my favorite pieces I own!

  25. Please beware, if your wearing faux fur because you don't want to wear real fur. The term Faux Fur is being used loosely by the fashion industry because of a loop hole in the laws. Most faux fur is in fact actual fur i.e. Racoon Dog.
