Product Review: Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Repair Cream

Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Repair Cream has been has been on my radar for some time now. I've seen raves on many hair forums on how it contributes to amazing twist outs, and my buddy Lo swears by this product as well. I will admit that I was kinda iffy on whether or not a leave-in treatment would give me ultra defined curls, however I decided to give it a go anyway.

Product Claims [according to website]:
Cantu shea butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream is made with real shea butter and essential oils to replace vital oil in your hair leaving it stronger and healthier with a natural shine.
Cantu shea butter leave in conditioning repair cream can be used on wet hair as an intensive moisturizing treatment or to tame frizz and fly-aways.
Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream helps…
  • moisturize dry brittle hair with deep penetrating oil and emollients
  • soften, detangle and add shine to hair
  • protect hair against heat and sun styling damage
  • provide extra protection from split ends and breakage
The Verdict:
It did a great job of softening my hair, however I wouldn't say it gave me the amount of definition I would have liked. I would however like to use this underneath Komaza Care Coconut Pudding, Bee Mine Bee Hold Curly Butter, or Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding to see how it fairs. At $5.00 a jar, I will definitely keep this in my styling arsenal and use it as a leave-in versus a styler.

One thing I did notice about this product is that it left a slight waxy residue. I can attribute this to the fact that I used more than the recommended amount, as I applied a quarter size amount to each section of hair I twisted. I imagine the issue with residue will be eliminated once I use it as a leave-in conditioner vs a styling aid.

Additional Thoughts:
If you're looking for something that gives mega definition to your twist outs/braid outs, opt for something that offers more hold and use this product underneath to keep it soft, hydrated, and manageable.

This product is formulated to help control breakage and impart moisture, which makes it a wonderful inexpensive option for transitioners.

  3. I haven't tried the Cantu Shea-Butter Leave-in, but I have a review going to be posted about the Cantu Shea-Butter Daily moisturizer cream. I guess the waxy residue is similar with the moisturizer, but I also used a little more than directed. However, your curls look super cute, I'm going to get the leave-in todayand try it out. :)

  4. Beware: this leave-in doesn't play well with other products so don't be surprised if you get curdle. It worked well with my JAM.

Besides that i love cantu leave-in for my wet buns. i have also used it as a conditoner and after i rinsed i was left with soft, easily detangled hair.

  5. I think your result was gorgeous! It looks defined to me, but obviously you know what you like. I've never tried it because my hair hates shea butter, but maybe I will try it one day just to see. If my results are anything like yours, I'd be pleased. :)

  6. I have this and my hair drinks it up. I like to apply it before bed to keep my hair conditioned and moisturized overnight but you are right for my hair it is too moisturizing and doesn't have much hold for a defined curl, which is why I entered your Bee Mine contest. ;0)

  7. This is a good product but like the others stated "It does not mix well with other products". Everytime I mix another product with this product, I end up with product residue on my dried hair. .. . =-(

  8. I haven't used this for a twist out nor would I expect it to yield the best results for my transitioning hair, but it is an AWESOME moisturizer. My hair sucks it right in and like Lipstick Diva, it also keeps my hair moisturized overnight. I would definitely recommend it just to keep hair from drying out.

  9. I really liked this leave in but unfortunately, it left little white flecks of the product in my hair. I tried it again the next time I washed my hair and I didn't use any other products with it. Same thing happened. In a last ditch effort (it's a great price, I didn't want to give up so easily), I purchased another jar in case the original one was from a bad batch. This time, I spread some out on my hand and what do you know, the little flecks were in the product itself!

Well, maybe I'm having bad luck with this but I would still recommend it if you're not having trouble with the flakes like I did. It left my hair pretty soft.

  10. Same here, when I use this with other products I get white residue "balls" left all over my hair and I also get residue when I tried to use it alone. I used it a while ago when I first heard about the product maybe a year or so ago and it worked fine. I used it as a styler and had decent results from it. Maybe they changed their ingredients or something, but I don't like this product. IDK maybe i'm just using it wrong...

  12. I use the Cantu Shea Butter Leave In just about everytime I weet my hair. I usually co wash and go, so I apply the Cantu and keep going. It works fine for me. My hair seems to get dry faster (in Florida) so I usually oil my hair up at nite and Cantu in the am.

  13. I used to use Cantu Shea Butter, but all of a sudden my hair stopped responding to it the way it used to. At first it left my hair nice and soft, but now, it's just a hard, dry, icky mess
