For The Budget Fashionistas - My Top Picks For Transitioners

Hydracap Processing Cap {$3.99} - Don't have the dough for a heating cap or hard-hat dryer? All you need is your favorite heavy duty DC [even suave strawberries and cream or herbal essence hello hydration, mixed with four tablespoons of olive oil will work] this processing cap, and a blow dryer and your hair is in for a deep conditioning treat it will thank you for later!

Jilbere Shower Comb {$1.59}- A nice [cheap] no frills seamless comb that detangles well! This should be a staple in everyone's "hair kit" whether relaxed or natural.

Herbal Essence Hello Hydration {varies; $3 and up) - Perfect for co-washing, deep conditioning, and using as an aid to help in the detangling process.

Henna {varies; $.99-3.99} - Yes you can use Henna if you are transitioning, as long as it is Body Art Quality. It's a natural, inexpensive way to fortify your hair, minimize breakage, as well as shedding.

Pantene Relaxed & Natural Breakage Defense Mask {5.99} - I have a lot of transitioning & relaxed friends that swear by this. I have even used this on my natural hair with stellar results! If you try this, make sure you rinse thoroughly with COLD water to prevent any type of film, or buildup [and to close the cuticles of course]!

Apple Cider Vinegar {varies; $.99 and up}- This can be used to gently remove product buildup, and it also helps close the cuticles if used during a final rinse [which helps a great deal with detangling]!ACV also gives imparts a nice healthy sheen to hair.
I swear by ACV rinsing, it also helps to remove minerals left behind from hard water as well! Try this simple recipe for starters.
2 Tablespoons of ACV + 2 Cups of Spring Water
Pour this mixture on your hair after rinsing out your conditioner; and leave in [the smell will go away after about 10minutes or so], your hair should be a lot more manageable, and shiny to boot!

  1. Love your blog! Saw you featured on The Fashion Bomb and fell in love :) Would you, by chance, have any idea on how to recreate the style in the pic you posted here? I'm always interested in trying new things with my fro, and this style is just screaming at me lol. Thanks!

  3. I LOVE your blog! I also saw you on fashion bomb website and immediately was drawn in because I have been natural for two years!! I transitioned very well. I couldnt find some of the products you listed but I did try potion 9 wearable treatment by sebastian and a treatment called keratin smoothing treatment by brazialn tech. THey worked SO well. How often should i do these treatments? My hair feels like silk and was easy to manage afterward. I wear it blown out until it gets your length! I thank you for your knowledge and inspiration! please keep referring products! I am trying to get out of products with sulfa as I am using design essentials line to wash and condition. I would love to know of any regular use shampoos you recommend!!!

  7. @Anonymous Thank you for stopping by! To create the volume, I would try a chunky twist out on dry hair. Finger comb the hair until the curls aren't as defined [but more of a fluffy mass like the woman pictured], and brush the sides into a mohawk, pinning them with the short bobby pins.

    @UrbanGlamGyrl Thank You!

@brandis Thank you for the compliment!! I appreciate it! I use the Sebastian Potion #9 probably about twice a month [as I rotate conditioners] - I also LOVE the sulfate free version of Keracare Hydrating Shampoo. It makes my hair extremely soft!

@ShandyLand You must try it! And if you have any questions, be sure and let me know!

@HellNotesForBeauty Please do! Let me know how you like it, and I LOVE Hello Hydration w/honey! Forgot to mention that one, I may have to do that this weekend loll

  21. I was just going to ask if you had a henna video. I just brought the Rainbow brand of henna from WholeFoods today as my hair is looking rather dull and I want to give it the black sheen without using my usual Jazzing rinse. I am going to view your video hopefully you've mentioned which brand you use as I have read mixed reviews on Rainbow. Great blog Nikole!

  22. I just decided to go natural, my hair is in a short style right now so I thought this would be the perfect time to transition. My last relaxer was 10 weeks ago, I feel like I am wearing a helmet on my head. I don't want to do the big chop any short hair styling suggestions.

  23. I stumbled onto you blog yesterday. I'm thinking of transitioning. Right now i'm going to say i'm on a long relaxer "stretch". It's been about 3 months since my last perm. We'll see whether I decide to relax or whether I stick it out and transition. Thanks for the product tips and your hair is gorgeous!

  24. I agree with Jessica,, However, I am wearing a sew-in right now and i had it for almost two months now but my reason for it was to grow my perm out. Do you think that is a good idea for transitioning? I am using braids to grow out the perm since my hair tends to grow faster in braids.

  27. Thank you for the heads up about ACV rinses...I just started using it but I didn't know it helps w/ dealing w/hard water (which I do). I use 1/4 cup of ACV and 2 cups of water. Am I using too much ACV?
