Today I attempted another braid out, and I must say I was quite pleased with the results. By using less products this time around, I was able to achieve hair that had a lot more sheen, body, and softness.
Here's what I did to get this look:
Clarified with L'anza Daily Clarifying Shampoo followed by Keracare Hydrating Detangling ShampooConditioned with L'anza Nourishing ConditionerUsed Paul Mitchell The Conditioner [Leave-In]Braided hair using Miss Jessie's Curly PuddingSpritzed Oyin Handmade Juices & Berries on my hair after I finished all of the braids
This is the size of the braids, it generally takes me about 45 minutes to braid my entire head - I allowed my hair to dry for 6-8 hours prior to taking down the braids. To aid in the takedown process, I used a smidgen Afroveda Citrus Sunsilk Hair Oil.
This is what my hair looks like after I take the braids down. I haven't separated the "crinkles" at this point.

Here's my hair after fluffing, and separating. As you can see, I have a lot more volume.
It came out great! Braid outs are my favorite. :D

ReplyDeleteYour hair is so pretty. How do you prevent shrinkage? When I do a braidout on wet hair it ends up looking so short when it dries but my hair is not much shorter than yours. Please help. I am tired of using heat everytime I wash!!!

ReplyDeleteHonestly, I have been battling with the shrinkage issue for awhile. Recently out of sheer laziness, I didn't spray each section of hair with water prior to braiding it (it was wet, but not soaking wet like it normally is), like I normally do. And to my surprise, I had more "length" versus the shaggy bob hybrid I normally have. - When I braid my hair when it is soaking wet, it shrivels up more than it does, if it were damp.
ReplyDeleteIf braiding your hair while damp still doesn't help you, then try air drying in 4 big plaits FIRST. Then take the plaits down and braid your hair. This should help a lot.
@BrownEyesPinkLips You can also try a product that helps fight shrinkage, such as Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. I use a smidgen on each section of hair, and it does the trick in a no frills kinda way.

ReplyDeleteso i tried this last night. Didn't come out as cute. Instead of my usual 8 braids I did smaller ones. I think I rolled the ends too tight...did u even use rollers when you did your hair?

Girl, you don't have much shrinkage at ALL!!!!! The only way I can avoid shrinkage is to band my hair or blow dry it first. LUCKY!!!!!!!!! Lol!
ReplyDeleteHow long does a jar of Miss Jessie's last you if you're using it once or twice a week for braid and twist outs? I stopped using amla and olive last year and back to shea butter/coconut oil. I've been wanting to try miss jessie for awhile now.

I just stumbled upon your site and the thought of putting chemicals om my locks seems like the stupidest idea ever!!! (yet next week i'll probably change my mind yet again)
Any who your Hair looks spectacular!!! I Take a different approach with my braidouts because of the mostly relaxed texture, The Satin Method, I've seen it done by ZanAndRob on youtube, Have you heard of it? I can only imagine How Bomb that would look on your hair. If you haven't already, I think you should give it a try :-)

Does anyone have suggestions for a shorter afro? My hair is about three inches long. I'm having trouble styling it because it is extremely thick. I absolutely have to wet it just to get a comb through it but I want a style that is still "lady-like" without getting a relaxer.
